What We Do

Current Activities

Tours

We host tours of Lautner buildings when the homes are available. The owner of the Sheats-Goldstein residence has kindly allowed our visits frequently, but we must work around his schedule. Other owners have generously allowed occasional tours. These are homes, though, and are actually lived in. They are not museums, so we honor the residents’ wishes and do not request access frequently.

Film Screenings

We host screenings or partner with others to screen films on John Lautner when opportunities arrive. Check our calendar to see if any are scheduled now.

Coming up (dates and locations to be determined):

Two John Lautner Masterpieces: A Traveling Exhibition

Two John Lautner Masterpieces: A Traveling Exhibition – The Symposium

Sponsored by The Organic Architect & Design Archives and The John Lautner Foundation

Special Events

Homeowners’ gatherings: We arrange to meet with owners of Lautner homes from time to time, to answer questions, offer suggestions and comments, and get to know the people who choose to live in these unique homes. The gatherings are informal.

Other events:

Preservation

We consult with owners and help provide resources for those wanting to restore Lautner buildings.

We are working to identify eligible buildings, with the intent of working with owners and others to submit applications to the National Register of Historic Places.

Sales

Our shop sells copies of the book Lautner A-Z, by the Dutch architects who have traveled everywhere there is a Lautner building, and who are featured in The Spirit in Architecture, first film on Lautner, by Bette Cohen. The shop also sells the DVD of the film Infinite Space, second film on Lautner, directed by Murray Grigor. We are always interested in adding Lautner-specific items as they come available.

National Register of Historic Places

Two Cal Poly professors and their students worked, with assistance from the Foundation, to obtain National Register status for eight Lautner residences. An application for all eight was approved by the State Historical Resources Commission on January 29, 2016, and the Keeper of the National Register listed the properties on April 19, 2016.
